On August 24, Lively Artistic Director, Leslie Friedman, was the guest artist performing for the Annual Benefit Dinner of the Asian Women’s Resource Center, at the Far East Cafe restaurant, an historic restaurant on Grant Avenue in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
An audience of nearly 700 people attended. The program raised funds for retro-fitting the AWRC’s one hundred year old building, designed by Julia Morgan. AWRC serves more than 4500 families. Its residence, Gum Moon, provides a sanctuary for women and children, especially those seeking refuge from domestic violence and help in making a transition to a new culture. It also offers job training and children’s classes.
The theme of the event, “One Brick at a Time,” reflected the growth of Gum Moon over the decades as well as the plans to secure the building.
Awards for community service were given to Arlene Chow, Patti Chang, and Cindy Zheng.
“It was a tremendous honor to be part of this event and show my support for the great work of the AWRC,” said Dr. Friedman.
