Lively’s Artistic Director, Leslie Friedman, taught a Performance Workshop class at the University of Rochester, Sept. 22. Missy Pfohl Smith, Director of U of R’s Dance Program invited Leslie to lead her Performance Workshop. Ms Pfhol Smith started the Workshop class for her most experienced dance students. The dancers have to audition to enter the class.
Leslie decided to lead the class through short pieces of her choreography, excerpts from Calcaterra, Come Down Angels, and Meeting Brook Benton. Each piece uses different movement techniques with music ranging from lyrical contemporary to modern Gospel and Brook Benton’s elegant R& B.
Reactions to the experience were enthusiastic; Ms Pfhol Smith sent this message from one of the students:
“Leslie’s choreography shows her personality. She can talk about almost everything nonstop as she loves to travel much across the stage with all levels and facings nonstop....And vitality. She is still like a little girl. I am sure every dancer is passionate about dance but her passion is well expressed. I felt she was not here to “teach” us to dance but to let us experience or say relive the history through her dance.”
WONDERFUL!!! Thanks to Missy Pfhol Smith for inviting Leslie to dance with her students and thanks to the students for their willingness to dance it all.
