"The dancer of the future will be one whose body and soul have grown so harmoniously together that the natural language of that soul will have become the movement of the human body. The dancer will not belong to any nation but to all humanity."
–Isadora Duncan, 1877-1927
The San Francisco Bay Area dance community celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Isadora Duncan Awards, March 11, 2011. Dancers from many techniques and styles from San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Clara and other Bay Area cities received awards for their accomplishments. Classical Indian dance, classical ballet, African dance, hula and others were honored.
The Lively Foundation is proud that our Artistic Director, Leslie Friedman was recognized in a salute to the founding committee of the “Izzies.” Serving as Chairperson of the Bay Area Dance Coalition, a large service organization for dancers and others involved in dance, Leslie was also Chair person of the first committee to select awardees.
Congratulations to the Bay Area dance community!
Isadora Duncan, born in San Francisco, lived in the Soviet Union and Europe. When she returned to California from her triumphs abroad, she and her dances were ridiculed.
